1955. The birth of an icon.

Think of the watch that a president would wear. You will probably imagine a watch that has status, portrays hard work, responsibility, success, power, respect and you will probably (if not, definitely) be thinking of the Rolex Day-Date. No wonder that Kennedy, Johnson, Ford, Reagan, Nixon and Roosevelt all wore one. Sure, they were not the only proud wearers as this watch has been sported by many government leaders, athletes, entrepreneurs, musicians and artists. The Day-Date is just the perfect choice for any person that has success! The Rolex Day-Date was the first automatic, waterproof chronometer wristwatch that indicated the date and the day of the week. The 1800-series, the third generation of Day-Dates, were introduced in 1961. The 1803 – the three indicates that the watch has a fluted bezel – is the most iconic one and simply stands for luxury.
The Day-Date is only available in precious metals and the piece offered by Amsterdam Vintage Watches has an 18k yellow-gold case and an 18k yellow-gold, fluted bezel. Both are in perfect condition and have barely been polished. This 1803, dating back to 1970, has a beautiful champagne gold, pie pan dial. The dial has wider applied baton markers and wider matching hands. Hence, the nickname 'Wide Boy". A very nice, small detail is that the modelname Day-Date on the dial is printed without the hyphen, so it says Day Date. This rarity is only seen on "Wide Boy" Day-Dates. Moreover, the dial of this beauty is protected by plexiglass, which gives the watch a true vintage look. The case measures 36mm in diameter and houses the caliber 1556. This is a true presidential Rolex and therefore, it comes with an 18k yellow-gold president bracelet, which is in great condition.

Introduction

Rolex Day-DateIn 1956, Rolex introduced one the most iconic watches ever made: the Day-Date. The Day-Date was the first waterproof self-winding chronometer certified wristwatch with a day and date function. And to top it off, it was only available in gold or platinum! Rolex also designed a new three-link bracelet, known as the ‘President,’ to pair with this special watch. With exception of the most modern executions, the Day-Date comes exclusively in a 36mm case. This is the very essence of luxurious time-keeping. Thanks to its popularity among a lot of prestigious people (for example, lots of presidents, hence, its nickname), it became Rolex’ flagship model. Over the years this model enjoyed associations with various ‘kinds of people’, from celebrities to Mafiosi (like Tony Soprano). They had all one thing in common: being successful in their area of expertise. To this day the Day-date is still synonymous with prestige and style. With exception of the most modern models the Day-Date comes in at 36mm. Do you earn this watch?REF. 1803A new era dawned for the Day-Date when the earliest references (65xx & 66xx) were replaced by the 18xx series in 1959, which contained the cal. 1555 and later the cal. 1556 movement. The 18xx Day-Date was produced with a wide variety of dial colors and configurations. Characteristic for this era is the so-called ‘Pie-Pan’ dial that looks like an upside-down pie-pan (a concentric ring that slopes down from the flat centre). The last two digits of the 18xx references indicate the type of bezel or the bezel/case decoration: 1803 Fluted bezel.
