Making the right pictures is essential when it comes to vintage watches. Different lighting can completely change the character and feeling of a watch, and sometimes, it reveals something you did not notice at first. What initially appeared to be a deep black dial revealed a beautiful warm brown glow. A subtle transformation that gives this Day-Date a character of its own.

The reference 18238 was introduced in 1988 as the successor to the 18038. While the overall design remained familiar, Rolex introduced an important upgrade with the new-generation movement. The 18238 is powered by the calibre 3155, featuring Rolex's double quickset function, allowing both the day and date to be adjusted independently. This was an improvement over the single quickset movement found in the 18038.

The condition of this watch is strong. The 18K yellow-gold case retains sharp lugs, and the bracelet remains in very good condition. The clasp still has a nicely sharp Rolex coronet. The real highlight, however, is the dial. The black diamond-set dial develops a beautiful brownish tone when viewed under direct light. Rather than presenting as a typical tropical dial, the colour reveals itself subtly depending on the lighting, creating a warm appearance while retaining its original black character. Dating to 1989, this Day-Date is accompanied by its original box and papers
