There’s “cool,” and then there’s this.
We’re talking about the Rolex Day-Date ref. 18238, cased in 18k yellow gold and fitted with one of the most mysterious, elegant, and downright gangster dials Rolex ever made: onyx. It also happens to be the favorite stone dial amongst both vintage and modern Rolex enthusiast.
No markers. No lume. Just deep, jet-black natural stone — cut and polished to perfection. Factory-made, razor-sharp, and mean as hell. A dial so minimalist it becomes maximalist. It's all about presence.
The 18238 was Rolex's 36mm President from the late ‘80s through the late ‘90s, packing the Caliber 3155 with a double quickset function for both day and date. A mechanical upgrade from the earlier references, but still keeping that vintage charm alive — sharp lugs, classic fluted bezel, and a supple President bracelet with concealed clasp. This was one of the very last, sold in 2000 in Asia. Hence it is fitted with the last generation of Onyx dials; with a "Swiss made" signature.
This piece walks into a room and doesn’t need to say a word.
