Mk4 “inverted 6” 16520 from 1991.

The Rolex Cosmograph Daytona 16520 marks a pivotal moment in the evolution of the Daytona. Introduced in 1988, it was the first automatic Daytona; powered by the Zenith El Primero–based calibre, reworked extensively by Rolex to meet their standards. Production ran until 2000, and in that relatively short window, a number of dial variations emerged. Sometimes having minor differences that set it apart and are characteristic for its production year. The so-called “inverted 6” dial remains one of the most charming details for those who know where to look. It defines an early production period (1991 in this case) and is appreciated by collectors for its subtle quirk.

The case remains in strong, honest condition, retaining full proportions with well-defined lugs and a crisp tachymeter bezel. These steel bezels (also Mk4) are notoriously prone to wear, making this example particularly pleasing, with its engravings still sharp and clearly legible.

The dial is exactly what you hope for. Clean, balanced, and beautifully preserved. The white surface contrasts elegantly with the black subdials, creating the classic “panda” aesthetic that has become so iconic within the Daytona family. The applied hour markers remain bright, with tritium lume that has aged softly over time, matched by the hands. The text is crisp throughout, and the overall appearance is one of clarity.

Inside beats the Rolex calibre 4030; based on Zenith’s legendary El Primero, yet slowed down and refined by Rolex for enhanced reliability and service intervals. It represents a unique chapter in Daytona history, bridging the gap between the manual-wind references and the fully in-house movements that followed.

Fitted with its original Oyster bracelet, sporting brushed centerlines instead of the later polished ones, the watch wears exactly as it should; solid, tight, and well preserved, with only minimal signs of wear. Together with the Zenith-era movement, the clean white dial, and the subtle inverted “6” detail makes this a piece that continues to reward both daily wear and closer inspection; exactly the kind of watch that grows on you over time.
