The ‘Zenith’ Daytona probably is the Daytona with the fastest popularity growth in the last year and that’s for a multiple reasons!First reason; it doesn’t have 4-digit reference prices yet. Second reason; it doesn’t have a horrible ceramic bezel. Third reason; it looks absolutely gorgeous. Of course, we have to stay a little bit objective but the 5-digits are definitely one of our favourites within the Daytona family. This specific Rolex Daytona is made out of stainless steel and 18k yellow gold. It carries reference 16523 and runs on the famous Zenith-based chronograph calibre 4030. On the dial we’ll find three gold sub-dials with ‘Daytona’ in red above the middle hour-dial. The white dial is carried out with tritium filled applied baton markers. The watch’s case, as well as the gold and steel Oyster bracelet, are in perfect condition. The stainless steel case and 18k yellow gold ‘400-unit’ bezel are still really thick and there’s barely any stretch on the bracelet. In our opinion this gold and steel Daytona is, without any doubt, the perfect combination between sportiness and class. With the combination of gold and steel you definitely have the best from both sides for an astonishing price.

Introduction

Rolex DaytonaRolex started making chronographs in the 1930s, but it was only in 1963 that a named product line was introduced: the Cosmograph. In some early advertisements, Rolex referred to the watch as the ‘Le Mans’ after the famous race track in France, although the name never appeared on the dial. After a few years, the line was officially renamed Cosmograph Daytona, after the racetrack in Florida.The most noticeable difference between these Cosmograph (Daytona) models and earlier Rolex chronographs, was the tachymeter scale (used for measuring distance and speed) that was moved from its traditional placement on the dial to the bezel. Furthermore, the dial was updated with the introduction of contrasting sub-dials.It’s hard to imagine now, but Daytonas received little love after their release. Most Daytonas languished in dealer displays for years and were only started to get noticed by Italian collectors and dealers in the late 1980s. Nowadays, Daytonas are among the most sought after Rolex models, fetching prices from $15,000 for modern ones to many millions for rare vintage references. A big contrast with the $210 list price when it was first released!
