This stainless steel Daytona reference 6239 from 1966 represents one of the most iconic and historically important chronographs Rolex ever produced. Elegant yet purposeful, it embodies the purest expression of the early Daytona before the model evolved into its later, more robust forms.
The silver “Big Daytona” dial is beautifully preserved and distinguished by its slightly tropicalized sub-dials, which have gently transitioned from deep black to a warm brown hue. This natural aging adds depth and character to the dial, creating a subtle contrast that is highly prized among seasoned collectors. The lumeplots are all present and aged nicely, just like the tritium in the hands. The typography is crisp, with the prominent Daytona signature anchoring the dial’s balanced and unmistakable aesthetic. Above the brandname there is a minor scratch on the surface of the dial, otherwise it's close to perfect.
The watch is fitted with the correct Mk1 “300 units per hour” steel bezel. Completing the dial is the correct thin seconds hand, an often-overlooked but crucial detail that underscores the integrity of this piece. Housed in a well-preserved stainless steel case, the watch retains strong proportions and sharp lines, reflecting careful ownership over the decades. It is paired with the correct riveted Oyster bracelet, fitted with 71 end links, further reinforcing the watch’s originality and period correctness.
Taken as a whole, this 1966 Daytona 6239 is a compelling and honest example of a reference that laid the foundation for one of the most celebrated chronographs in horological history. Subtle patina, correct components, and timeless design converge to create a watch that speaks to the collector.
