Imagine this: it’s 2005, and you discover that certain Rolex Daytona dials have mysteriously changed colour over time. Fast-forward a few years, and those very dials are carrying your name. Meet the ‘Patrizzi’.
The ref. 16520 was introduced in 1988, marking a major change for the Daytona. After decades of hand-wound, 37mm chronographs with plexiglass crystals, Rolex finally moved to a 40mm Oyster case with a sapphire crystal and automatic winding. The design was modernized, but the most important change happened underneath the dial. The legendary manual-winding Valjoux movement made space for the very first automatic beating heart. Zenith's famous El Primero movement was already regarded as one of the most important automatic chronograph movements ever produced. Rolex heavily modified the movement before putting it into the Daytona, reducing its frequency from 36,000 to 28,800 vibrations per hour and replacing or redesigning a large number of components. The result was a movement that retained the robust architecture of the El Primero while meeting Rolex's own standards for reliability and performance. The Zenith-powered Daytona was produced for roughly a decade, making the ref. 16520 an important link between the hand-wound four-digit Daytonas and the later in-house Daytona.
And then there is the dial. In 2005, Osvaldo Patrizzi, the well-known chairman and auctioneer of Antiquorum, drew attention to a particularly interesting phenomenon found on some black-dial 16520s. The lacquer used on the sub-dials had aged over the years, causing the originally black counters to develop a warm brown or champagne colour. This unusual change was not seen on every example, making these naturally aged dials particularly interesting to collectors. From then on, these watches became known as 'Patrizzi' Daytonas, named after the man who brought this unusual detail to the attention of the collecting world.
This 1997 example shows the characteristic Patrizzi effect beautifully. The glossy black dial is contrasted by the warm golden-brown sub-dials, while the original tritium hands and hour markers have developed a charming ivory colour. The combination of the well-preserved dark dial, naturally aged counters and warm tritium gives this Daytona a completely different character from a standard black-dial 16520.
The 40mm stainless steel Oyster case is paired with the original Oyster bracelet, featuring polished centre links. The case remains nice and thick, retaining the strong proportions that make the five-digit Daytona so appealing. The sapphire crystal adds a more contemporary touch, while the tritium dial and Zenith-based movement keep this firmly in the world of vintage Rolex. It comes with service papers and Rolex warranty card and is ready to be worn for many years to come.
