This early gilt dial -with closed minutetrack- changed color to an entrancing tone of reddish brown, with some hints of purple; depending how the light hits the rugged surface.
The story of the Explorer began with two earlier, better known as; 'Bubblebacks', the references 6098 and 6150. These were used by adventurers and mountaineers at the beginning of the 50’s. They did not bear the name Explorer yet. Only in 1953, when Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay carried Rolex Oyster Perpetuals with them during the first successful ascent of Mount Everest. To commemorate this achievement, Rolex launched the Explorer model. Introduced under the references 6298 and 6350. They were fitted with the typical “explorer” dial; with the famous 3-6-9 and had the well-known 'Mercedes' hands introduced not long after. When it comes to horological legends, the Rolex Explorer 1016 stands as an epitome of adventure, resilience, and timeless elegance. Then came the references 6150 which was then replaced by the 6610, only difference between the two was the new 1030 caliber in the 6610. Rolex continued to advance their technology rapidly and introduced their new 15xx movement in different models. Then came the, now legendary, ref. 1016 which became an absolute workhorse for Rolex bearing the caliber 1570.
But what happens when this iconic timepiece embraces the character and allure of age? Enter this Rolex Explorer 1016 with a gilt Mk1 dial that has transitioned into a mesmerizing 'tropical, dark red' hue. A true toolwatch that transforms this classic into a one-of-a-kind masterpiece. And how can we not notice this dial first? Originally black, it has aged gracefully to a captivating tropical dark red, a transformation that occurs only under specific conditions and takes a lot of time. This color change is not just an aesthetic marvel but a testimony to the watch’s rich history and the environments it has encountered. The tropical dial exudes a warm, vintage charm and makes each glance at the watch a journey through time.
Looking at the condition of this beauty, which dates back as early as 1960 -the very first production year of the 1016- we can only say and vouch for its adventurous state. The case is still very sharp. Completing this timepiece is its riveted Oyster bracelet, a feature that underscores the watch’s tool heritage. Despite its years of service, the bracelet remains in a remarkably good condition. The slight stretch and war scars are clear indicators of a life well-lived. The riveted links, once a standard of durability, now evoke a sense of nostalgia, reminding us of Rolex’s engineering prowess in the mid-20th century.
Whether scaling mountains or navigating urban jungles, this watch is a testament to the durability and timeless appeal of Rolex. If you are fortunate enough to acquire this extraordinary timepiece, you are not just buying a watch; you are embracing a legacy of exploration, resilience, and timeless beauty.
