Explore the tropics! This well-conditioned Explorer 1016 surely has been on the wrist of an explorer. The dial of this stunner shows that the watch has been worn and well-lived as it has a beautifully aged tritium index and a chocolate brown colour. However, the owner surely was a well-dressed adventurer because it looks like the watch has been worn under the cuffs of a dress shirt. Why? Well, the dial discolours from deep chocolate brown on the 9 hour side to light, caramel brown on the 3-hour side. It could be that the 3-hour side was not covered by the cuffs and therefore, exposed to more sunlight. Anyhow, this gentleman surely explored the world in style with this Rolex on his wrist. This Rolex dates back to 1964. It has a stainless steel case, with the elegant case diameter of 36 mm, which is just perfect for everyone. It comes with a time-correct, stainless steel Oyster bracelet. The watch runs on the 1570 calibre; the first Rolex in-house calibre (together with the 1560) that passed the tests of the COSC. This movement was used for the 1016 until the end of its production in 1989. The domed bezel and lugs are so sharp that it looks like the case barely has been polished.

Introduction

Rolex Explorer IOne of the very first models built to meet the demands of a true professional. For example, Sir John Hunt who ascended the Mount Everest in 1953. This was the first rugged expedition that this watch was issued for, but definitely not the only expedition. This watch has been on the wrist of numerous explorers. Therefore, it is no wonder that Rolex states that this watch has been designed to conquer the world! Over the years, the Explorer I has been made in various executions and there is one thing that a lot - definitely not all, like some early pieces - have in common, the so-called 3-6-9 Explorer dial.
