The Explorer I is the most understated of Rolex’ legendary toolwatches. It is perfectly at home being worn while weathering the most extreme conditions or simply as an everyday watch.Though the Explorer I has gone through various iterations since its introduction in the 1950s, two constants have remained: the characteristic 3-6-9 dial and the 36 mm diameter. This ref. 114270 dates back to 2006 and features a glossy black dial with applied 18k white-gold hour markers and Super Luminova luminous compound. The 36 mm case is in excellent condition and comes with a scratch resistant sapphire crystal and a sporty Oyster bracelet with flip lock clasp.
Introduction
Rolex Explorer IRolex has a storied history of building tool watches dedicated to professional users. In 1953, Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay were the first to reach the summit of Mount Everest, with a Rolex Oyster Perpetual on Hillary's wrist. In honor of the expedition, Rolex released the Explorer later that year.Over the years, the Explorer I has been produced in various executions. Except for the very earliest ones, they all have one thing in common: the characteristic 3-6-9 numerals on the dial (the so-called ‘Explorer dial’).
