Rolex GMT-Master 16758 'SARU'

The Rolex GMT-Master 16758 SARU represents a fascinating intersection of tool-watch heritage and gem-setting craftsmanship.

The Rolex GMT-Master 16758 SARU represents a fascinating intersection of tool-watch heritage and gem-setting craftsmanship. Introduced in the early 1980s, it took the proven GMT platform favored by pilots and frequent travellers, and reinterpreted it in a more opulent fashion. Gold sports models were far from the norm, but have been in production as early as the 50's. Now, gemsetting such timepieces seemed like an unthinkable contradiction. The 16758SARU is the first to ever bridge the gap between a functional sports piece and high jewellery; executed very convincingly. Slightly later followed the two diamond Daytona references: 6269 & 6270.

Its defining feature is the bezel: a sequence of baguette-cut blue sapphires and red rubies separated by brilliant diamonds, a deliberate echo of the classic red-and-blue “Pepsi” insert but executed entirely in precious stones. Just like the centrelink of the President bracelet, the dial too is set with brilliant cut diamonds. This pave setting is interrupted by cartouches with the brand and model-name proudly displayed. The hour markers are sapphire set.

Inside, the watch remains every bit a GMT-Master. It houses a chronometer-certified automatic movement with an independently adjustable 24-hour hand and rotating bezel, giving the wearer genuine two-time-zone functionality.

Because the SARU configuration was produced in very limited numbers, it has become highly sought after by collectors. It’s rare to find a watch that so clearly signals Rolex’s technical pedigree while also showcasing the brand’s gem-setting skills. For someone who values both splendor and rarity, this GMT offers not just a striking appearance but also a direct link to a particular moment in Rolex history.

We are extremely pleased to bring this highly important Rolex back to the market. It was last auctioned by Christie's in 2013, where it fetched 245.000CHF.
