A thicker case, bigger crown guards and a wider bezel. Those aspects created the very first GMT-Master II reference 16760. Thanks to its bigger case and elegant shapes the watch is often referred as ‘Fat Lady’ or ‘Sophia Loren’.This Rolex GMT-Master II dates back to the year 1988, is (and was only) made out of stainless steel and runs on the renewed caliber 3085. This new movement made it possible to move the GMT arrow hand back and forwards separately from the minute- and hour-hand.The reference 16760 was also the first GMT-Master that came with a black and red bezel insert that’s now better known as the ‘Coke’. The funny thing is, that this GMT comes with a ‘misprinted’ bezel insert. Those inserts are very rare and sought-after because it was almost impossible that imperfect parts came through Rolex’s quality inspections. This GMT was also the first GMT-Master that was carried out with a sapphire crystal. When we take a look underneath the sapphire crystal we’ll find the black tritium dial. The watch’s tritium index is surrounded with white-gold hour marker surrounding. You wouldn’t guess is but also the white gold hour marker surroundings on the GMT were introduced on the 16760.We hope you understand that the 16760 isn’t just a regular GMT-Master. So smash that piggy bank and head this way before it’s gone.

Introduction

Rolex GMT-MasterFasten your seatbelts for the story of the Rolex GMT-Master. Aviation company Pan-Am requested Rolex to create a wristwatch that would display multiple time-zones simultaneously, as their flights got longer; crossing multiple time-zones. Rolex came up with the GMT-Master (‘GMT’ stands for ‘Greenwich Mean Time’) in 1954. The watch features a date-function and an extra hour hand (with triangle) that points out the second time zone on the bi-directional turning, 24hour bezel.Still linked to aviation and although meant for professional use, it enjoys a much wider fan base ever since it first saw light. Over the years it underwent some changes and there are so many wonderful variations of this all-time Rolex classic. Some GMT’s are great as a single purchase, others are a wonderful addition to any collection and some of them can be considered as the crowning glory.
