The combination of lustrous yellow gold and deep ocean blue is perfect for a decadent sports watch.

The 18K yellow gold ref. 16808 Submariner fills an important spot in the history of Rolex diving watches: it is the first Submariner model to feature the most important hallmarks of a modern Submariner

The 16808 was introduced in 1978/1979—together with its steel sibling, the 16800—and discontinued a decade later. The 16808 was the first Submariner to feature a sturdy sapphire crystal together with a dial with applied indices giving the watch a thoroughly modern look (in contrast, the steel 16800 still came with a matte dial with painted indices).

This beauty from 1986 features an 18K yellow gold case with a dazzling blue dial and bezel combo. The dial has attained a faint purple tinge over time, while the original blue bezel is still in flawless condition.

The case is in excellent condition and is paired with one of our signature AVW denim straps together with a gold plated Rolex buckle.

Rolex SubmarinerIn 1953, Rolex introduced one of the world’s first wrist watches geared specifically towards divers: the Submariner. Rolex had to confront a number of challenges when designing its first dive watch. The watch obviously had to withstand significant amounts of pressure and had to accurately measure time spent underwater, which the first Submariner achieved by featuring a 330ft/100m depth rating and a rotating diving bezel. It also had to be easily legible in conditions of reduced visibility yet aesthetically pleasing. Hence, the Sub’s iconic large luminous hour markers and Mercedes hands set against a contrasting black dial. The Submariner is the most iconic and desirable luxury watch of all time and has been adopted by luminaries such as Jacques Cousteau, Che Guevara, and none other than James Bond. Our favorite Bond, Sean Connery, wore a big crown Sub in the 1962 classic ‘Dr. No’. The watch was also featured in ‘Goldfinger’ and ‘Thunderball’.
