The Rolex Submariner 5513 is the archetype of the purpose-built dive watch. Produced from 1962 to 1989, it evolved through a series of dial executions that collectors know by heart. One of the most desirable is the Non Serif dial, introduced around 1969 as Rolex moved from meters-first to feet-first depth ratings.
This example dates to 1970 and carries that Non Serif layout. The 3, 6, and 9 plots are clean rectangular blocks without the tiny flare seen on earlier dials. In true period fashion, the typography still shows serifs on the E of ROLEX, a quirk that helps place the watch in this short transitional window.
Condition is excellent. The matte black dial is crisp, and the tritium on dial and hands has aged to a balanced eggshell tone, evenly matched across all plots. The bezel insert is deep, even black with honest wear and clear numerals. The stainless-steel case shows strong lugs and well-defined edges, complemented by an Oyster bracelet that feels as solid as it looks.
Inside is caliber 1520, the robust movement fitted to non-chronometer 5513s. Hence the clean two line text at six rather than the four line script of chronometer references. It is the Submariner at its most distilled: legible, reliable, and built to work.
A well-preserved 1970 Non Serif 5513 like this offers exactly what collectors want from a vintage Submariner. Authentic detail, cohesive patina, and the kind of integrity that never goes out of date.
