A gilt Submariner that underlines the importance of the 5513.

The 5513 was introduced in the early '60s and saw a production run until 1989. Due to that long production period, they naturally saw many variants. The most sought after ones, have Gilt dials, which were used until '66/'67. Gilt refers to the reverse-printing on the dial, that appears to be gold and is even considered a lost art in the world of watchmaking.

The second feature on this stunning patinated galvanic dial is something you might not have yet noticed. Back in the day the compound used for the luminous effect of the plots and hands were radioactive. Rolex introduced a transitional indicator on their dials, to signify the lesser radioactivity. These two variants are known as the 'Exclamation mark' and the 'Underline' dials. Last mentioned is present on this specimen. This small hyphen is usually placed at the bottom half of the dial, in rarer occasions one can find it underneath "Oyster Perpetual".

The surface of the dial has developed quite some character over time but remains glossy and extremely appealing. The lume aged to a remarkably warm color, adding more charm to an already delicious piece of horological history.

The case displays a strong condition with thick lugs. The extendable riveted Oyster bracelet is dated to the mid 60's. This timepiece is a collectors item and remains in such condition; with many more years of enjoyment left to give. The bezel has faded from black to a blueish-grey color, with some light scuffs on the surface, making the watch fall in to perfect harmony.
