Tone-on-tone watches have a lovely soothing aesthetic quality to them. But soothing doesn’t have to mean dull at all, especially when featuring a precious dial and diamond setting.
This ref. 118399 from 2009 features a 36 mm 18k white gold case with polished lugs and a matching 18k white gold President bracelet with the iconic concealed clasp. The fluted bezel that is traditionally found on a Day-Date is supplanted with an 18k white gold bezel with (uncommon for Rolex) carré-cut diamonds.
The dial, meanwhile, is cut from precious Tahitian mother of pearl. The pearl shells that are cultured in the atolls of Tahiti feature a much darker, almost blackish, hue compared to shells cultured elsewhere, giving the nacreous luster of the pearl a cool and mysterious quality.
In keeping with the precious looks of the mother of pearl, the dial features factory-set brilliant-cut diamond indices interspersed with baguette-cut diamonds at the 6 and 9 o’clock positions. In keeping with Rolex tradition, the non-lume dial is paired with a closed (non-lume) 18k white gold handset.
This exquisite ref. 118399 is in wonderful condition with sharp lines and a tight bracelet. The watch is powered by an automatic movement with a convenient double quickset function to separately adjust the day and date discs.

The very essence of luxurious time-keeping, provided with a day and date function. It was launched in 1956 as a niche model and was only produced in precious metals (yellow-, white- and rose gold or platinum). Its retail price was way costlier than any other Rolex model. However, due to its popularity among a lot of prestigious people, for example presidents (hence, its nickname), it became Rolex’ flagship model. Over the years this model has enjoyed associations with a wide variety of people, from world leaders, athletes, celebrities and mafiosi (like Tony Soprano). Regardless of the differences, they all had one thing in common: being successful in their area of expertise. Therefore, to this day the Day-Date is still synonymous with luxury, prestige, style and success. With exception of the most modern models, the Day-Date comes in at 36 mm.
