When we think of Audemars Piguet nowadays, the first thing we think about is the Royal Oak. But that obscures AP’s distinguished history of producing beautifully finished and highly complicated watches.
The reference 25717PT encompasses a limited release to celebrate the 700 year anniversary of the Swiss Confederacy in 1991, as indicated by the commemorative engraving on the case back. Compared to the Audemars Piguet’s better known line of automatic perpetual calendar wrist watches, the ref. 25717PT features a classic manual wound movement and a smaller diameter compared to the automatic line.
The 25717PT is executed in a 950 platinum case and measures 33 mm. The case features a beautiful stepped bezel and elegant teardrop lugs. The engraving on the case back indicates that this particular watch is number 45 out of 70 pieces.
The crisp white dial features three recessed sub-registers that indicate the day, month, and date, whereas an aperture at the 6 o’clock position displays the phases of the moon. The classic dial lay-out is accentuated by thin baton indices, elegant blued sword hands on the sub-registers, and a minimalist stick-style handset for the time.
The reference 25717PT is powered by the beautifully finished ultra-thin caliber 2003 manual winding movement, which was co-developed by Audemars Piguet together with Jaeger-LeCoultre and Vacheron Constantin in the mid-20th century. Despite Audemars Piguet adding its own 2805 QP perpetual calendar module on top of the base caliber, the movement manages to attain an impressively thin profile of just 3.19 mm.
The watch is in excellent condition and was previously sold by our friends over at A Collected Man. We’ve left the watch on the beautiful taupe leather ACM strap together with the original 950 platinum Audemars Piguet ardillon buckle. The watch is accompanied by an extract from the Audemars Piguet archives.
Introduction
Audemars Piguet is among the holy trinity Swiss maisons d’horlogerie alongside Patek Philippe and Vacheron Constantin. Audemars Piguet has a storied history of producing high-complication watches. It all started in 1875, when Jules Louis Audemars and Edward Auguste Piguet founded the company in the heart of the Vallée de Joux, Le Brassus, Switzerland. This pure, rough and wild landscape, with deep, dark forests, ice-cold waters and the omnipresence of rocks and hills, provided inspiration and raw materials for the Swiss watch manufacture to develop the finest watches. Since its inception, Audemars Piguet has specialized in rare, valuable and highly-complicated watches like perpetual calendars, chronographs and chiming watches. Nowadays, the emphasis of Audemars Piguet lies on the iconic Royal Oak line.
