Jasper has been trying to convince us for a while that Audemars Piguet’s Code 11.59 line is the real deal. Well, we begrudgingly have to admit that the bastard was right. The release of the Code 11.59 line in 2019 was a ballsy move by Audemars Piguet. It represented the introduction of a line of completely new watches; no heritage, no homages, and no redesigns. The Code 11.59 line is a modern and brazen take on luxury watch-making. The only things that remind us of AP’s storied history: ultra high-end finishing and crazy complications. This ref. 26394OR is the best of the bunch. In short, it’s a classic perpetual calendar, with an astronomy-themed dial, packaged in a revolutionary case. The rather large 41 mm 18k pink gold case features a three layer construction, consisting of a thin round bezel, a matching round caseback, and an octagonal case middle. Recognize that shape in the middle? Yes, that’s a playful nod to the iconic Royal Oak! What we love most about this new case design are the openworked lugs, which give the watch an almost futuristic and architectural feel. The stunning dial is made of aventurine, a quartz mineral whose name is derived from the Italian “a ventura”, meaning “by chance”. The particular aventurine chosen by Audemars Piguet for the ref. 26394OR features a sky-blue hue and sparkling inclusions that give the dazzling illusion of a star-lit sky.The dial sports three sub-registers for the perpetual calendar complication, with the day found on the register at 9 o’clock, the date at 3 o’clock, and the month and leap year indicators at the 12 o’clock position. Meanwhile, a cutout at the 6 o’clock position reveals a romantic moonphase indicator and a raised inner bezel displays the weeks of the year. The 26394OR is powered by Audemars Piguet’s caliber 5134 self-winding movement. The incredible movement has a 65-hour power reserve and features a lovely skeletonized 22k pink rotor that is visible through the sapphire caseback. This astronomical watch was sold this very year and comes on a blue alligator leather Audemars Piguet strap with an 18k pink gold Audemars Piguet deployant clasp. The watch comes as a full set with the original box and papers.

Introduction

Audemars PiguetAudemars Piguet is among the holy trinity Swiss maisons d’horlogerie alongside Patek Philippe and Vacheron Constantin. Audemars Piguet has a storied history of producing high-complication watches. It all started in 1875, when Jules Louis Audemars and Edward Auguste Piguet founded the company in the heart of the Vallée de Joux, Le Brassus, Switzerland. This pure, rough and wild landscape, with deep, dark forests, ice-cold waters and the omnipresence of rocks and hills, provided inspiration and raw materials for the Swiss watch manufacture to develop the finest watches. Since its inception, Audemars Piguet has specialized in rare, valuable and highly-complicated watches like perpetual calendars, chronographs and chiming watches. Nowadays, the emphasis of Audemars Piguet lies on the iconic Royal Oak line.
