Who said sports watches have to be made of steel? Patek certainly didn't.
Introduced in 1981, the ref. 3800 was revealed as the midsize sibling to the original Nautilus ref. 3700. Measuring 37.5mm across, it retained the porthole-inspired case, rounded octagonal bezel and integrated bracelet of Genta's original design, while offering slightly more compact proportions. It was more than simply a smaller Jumbo, however, as the 3800 also introduced an important technical change to the Nautilus family. The Nautilus ref. 3800J takes Gérald Genta's iconic design and executes it entirely in 18k yellow gold.
The original ref. 3700 did without a central seconds hand, whereas the 3800 introduced one through its automatic calibre 335 SC. The initials SC stand for 'Seconde Centrale', referring to the centrally mounted seconds hand. Patek Philippe used several movement generations throughout the production of the 3800, but the central seconds remained a defining feature of the reference.
Manufactured in 1985 and sold in 1986, this example features the classic dark blue dial with horizontally embossed grooves. Applied yellow gold baton markers and matching hands complement the warm tone of the case, while the date aperture at three o'clock reveals a black date disc with white numerals. The contrast between the deep blue and yellow gold is a combination we adore so much.
The 18k yellow gold case and integrated bracelet give this Nautilus a different presence from its stainless-steel counterparts and are preserved in excellent condition. The alternating brushed and polished surfaces bring out the different shapes of the bracelet links, while the construction follows the contours of the case as Genta originally intended. Despite the solid gold construction, the 37.5mm proportions keep it nicely balanced on the wrist. When taking a look at the case back, the hallmarks are still crisp and have a good visibility.
Accompanied by its Patek Philippe Extract from the Archives, confirming its production in 1985 and sale in 1986, this 3800J is a lovely example of the Nautilus in solid yellow gold. A familiar design, but in a wonderful way of wearing it.
