In 1939, right before World War II, Rodrigues and Teixeira (two businessmen from Portugal) visited International Watch Company’s headquarter in Schaffhausen. The rest is history. The two men commissioned IWC to create a large, stainless steel wristwatch. This watch had to be highly accurate and perfectly readable. In order to fulfill these requirements, a pocket watch movement was used. With a case diameter of 43mm, this watch was gigantic for that era. The key design elements were its size and thin bezel, the Arabic numerals, leaf hands and sub dial at the 6-hour position. The piece that we have for offer today is a chronograph dating back to circa 2005. It bears almost the same aesthetic characteristics as the first Portugieser. It measures 40mm in diameter, has a white dial with two sub dials. One sub dial at the 6-hour position for the seconds and one at the 12-hour position that functions as a minute counter. Furhtermore, this reference 3714 has the classic, steel leaf hands, thin bezel and comes with an original, black leather strap.
Introduction
International Watch Co.In 1868 Florentine Aristo Jones, an engineer from Boston started International Watch Co. in Shaffhausen, far away from the “watch centre” in the western of Swiss. He started the company near a hydroelectric power station to provide his machines of power so he could carry out his passion to make one of the world’s finest mechanical watches. As a result of their perfected craftmanship, the internal vocational training for their watchmakers and their refusal to do massproduction, IWC still makes not only one of the world’s finest, but also one of the world’s most stylish dress watches.
