Who said it takes millions or even hundreds of thousands to acquire rare and beautiful vintage watches?Sure, there are plenty of vintage Pateks, Rolexes, APs, and more to be found, that push into the stratospheric price category. But, with a bit of dedication and an open mind there’s a literal treasure chest of beautiful and sometimes outright rare vintage pieces to be found. This reference 1519 dress watch by Patek Philippe is the perfect example. Introduced in the early 1940s, very few were ever made and less than five are publicly known to date. This particular 1519 features an 18k pink gold rectangular case (measuring 33.6 x 24.7 mm) in lovely art deco style with hooded lugs. When viewed from the front, the watch looks like a reserved mid-century dress watch. But when the watch is flipped to its side, its bold character becomes apparent. The thick, almost slab-like, sides of the case give this classic piece a presence that is uncharacteristic for the period it was born in. The dramatic profile is further enhanced by the exquisitely curved crystal that connects organically with the convex hooded lugs to create a smooth slope towards the black alligator leather strap. The dial is executed in wonderful ton-sur-tone pink gold with art deco style Arabic quarters, interspersed with exclamation point-like indices consisting of applied batons and dots. An elegant sub-seconds register is implemented at the six o’clock position, while the thin sword-style handset injects the dial with a classy sense of calm. This 1519 is powered by a manual winding movement and is accompanied by an extract of the Patek Philippe archives that dates it all the way back to 1946.
