A spectacular 3700/1J from 1981.

Few watches have shaped modern horology quite like the Patek Philippe Nautilus. Born during the height of the Quartz Crisis, it represented a bold strategic shift for the manufacture. As inexpensive quartz watches devastated the traditional Swiss watch industry, Patek Philippe responded by entering an entirely new category.

Following the revolutionary success of Audemars Piguet's Royal Oak in 1972, Patek Philippe once again turned to the legendary designer Gerald Genta to create its own vision of the luxury sports watch. The result was the Nautilus—an audacious, porthole-inspired design that challenged convention. Initially introduced in stainless steel, it carried the extraordinary retail price of USD 3,100, making it one of the most expensive steel watches ever offered at the time.

As the Nautilus quickly established itself as an icon, more luxurious executions followed. The present example is crafted in 18k yellow gold and belongs to the coveted first series, reference 3700/1, rather than the later 3700/11. While the distinction may appear subtle, the differences in the case and bracelet construction are significant to collectors. The first-series bracelet features shorter links and a gentler taper, resulting in a more substantial feel on the wrist while retaining the unmistakable elegance of the original design.

The dial is nothing short of iconic. It perfectly illustrates Patek Philippe's philosophy of elevating a sports watch through exceptional finishing. The embossed horizontal grooves; or "ribbed," as the manufacture describes them, lend remarkable depth and sophistication to an otherwise restrained layout. Applied baton hour markers and matching hands are filled with tritium, while the omission of the marker at 3 o'clock allows the date aperture to integrate seamlessly into the design. Although the Extract from the Archives describes the dial simply as "matte black," it reveals a far richer character in person, shifting beautifully between deep blue, anthracite, and charcoal depending on the light. This watch is fitted with the desirable Type 3 dial, more specifically the 'bis' version with elegant serif typography.

Reinforcing the fact that the Nautilus was never intended to be merely a utilitarian sports watch, Patek Philippe equipped it with one of the finest ultra-thin automatic movements of its era. The Calibre 28-255 C, derived from the celebrated Jaeger-LeCoultre Calibre 920, is renowned for both its technical excellence and refined finishing.

Accompanying the watch is its Extract from the Archives and some official service history. A rare first-series yellow-gold Nautilus that embodies the daring vision of its era while remaining as relevant today as it was over four decades ago. "Jumbo" in size, great in demand, and monumental in historical significance.
