The Patek Philippe 5711 Nautilus has been the must-have watch for years now.The 5711’s popularity can be attributed to two factors. For one, it’s the modern reinterpretation of the iconic Gerald Genta-designed ref. 3700. Second, Patek has strictly limited the supply of the Nautilus, meaning that it’s nigh impossible to walk into a dealership and buy one on the spot. While the ref. 5711 in steel already hit the market in 2006 and a rose-gold version with a leather strap was added to the line-up in 2007, it took until 2015 for a rose gold version with a matching rose-gold bracelet to be released as well. The 5711R’s iconic octagonal Nautilus Genta-designed case is molded from 18k rose gold and features a horizontally-embossed chocolate brown dial. The case measures 40 mm in diameter and is approximately 8.5 mm thick. The octagonal bezel features a brushed finish and high-polished edges. The watch comes with the well-known integrated Nautilus bracelet, also executed in 18k rose gold. The transparent sapphire crystal caseback displays the exquisitely finished Patek Philippe caliber 324 S C automatic movement. The watch was bought in 2020 at Salon Patek Philippe in UK and comes as a full set with the original box and papers.
Introduction
Patek Philippe NautilusPatek Philippe’s ultra exclusive timepieces have always been intended for the lucky few. Its mechanical masterpieces were traditionally made from precious metals and worn by an elegant lady or gentleman. After the roaring success of Audemars Piguet’s Gerald Genta-designed Royal Oak, Patek decided that it also needed its own luxury steel sports watch. As the story goes, Gerald Genta drew the initial design of the Nautilus while observing a group of Patek executives having dinner during the Baselworld watch fair. When the Nautilus was introduced in 1976 it was advertised as a watch that worked equally well with a wet suit as with a dinner suit. Not quite incidentally, it was also the most expensive steel sports watch available in the market.Ever since the very first Nautilus, the Patek and Nautilus names have become inseparable. Over the years, many variations, with different materials, dial colors and layouts, and complications, have been added to the Nautilus lineup. However, Genta’s original design elements have remained in all these executions: a rounded octagonal bezel inspired by the portholes of a ship with ‘ears’ on the sides of the case that look like the hinges of a porthole.
