Linen dials are beloved among watch enthusiasts for their enchanting texture. The lesser known Shantung (also known as Mosaic or Brick) dial was another captivating fabric-like option in the 1960s and 70s.The Shantung moniker refers to the horizontal weave-like texture reminiscent of Shantung silk that originated from the Chinese province of Shandong. This blue-dialled ref. 1500 Oyster Perpetual Date was produced in 1970 features 18k white gold baton markers and lovely custard yellow tritium lume plots that match the tritium in the handset. The 34 mm stainless steel case is still thick and features a stainless steel domed bezel. The watch comes on a period-correct folded stainless steel Oyster bracelet in great condition.

Introduction

Rolex DateRolex was the first to introduce a full water- and dustproof case in 1926 by combining a screw down crown with a two-piece screw-down case. The resulting Oyster case has been the basis of the vast majority of Rolex watches since. The 1950s saw the introduction of the Oyster Perpetual Date line. For some context, in 1945 Rolex had released the Datejust as the first ever self-winding wristwatch with a date indication in a 36mm waterproof case. The Oyster Perpetual Date, on the other hand, came in a slightly smaller 34 mm case and has been in continuous production until this very day.
