A full gold Day-Date a little too much for you? How about a full gold Date, then? There’s a thousand reasons we love this ref. 15238 Date, but ain’t nobody got time to list ‘em all so let’s go with the most important ones. Gold Day-Dates are cool, but they can be a little too flashy for some. A 34 mm Date, however, is the perfect alternative for those looking for a slightly more modest full gold Rolex (inasfar a gold Rolex can be considered modest). This ref. 15238 dates back to 1990 and combines the best of modern and vintage Rolex. The sapphire crystal and automatic movement with quickset date function are decidedly modern. The watch, however, comes on an amazing gold riveted Oyster bracelet with massive endlinks. While steel riveted Oysters were discontinued in the 1960s (and the last ones were delivered in the USA in the late 1970s), gold riveted Oysters were made long after that. The bracelet’s dimensions, tapering from 19mm at the lug to a svelte 13.5mm at the clasp, further add to its elegant look. If all that wasn’t enough, the watch comes with a blue sunbrushed dial. Oh yeah, it’s a full set too. Why am I still talking? Someone buy the damn watch already!
Introduction
Rolex DateRolex was the first to introduce a full water- and dustproof case in 1926 by combining a screw down crown with a two-piece screw-down case. The resulting Oyster case has been the basis of the vast majority of Rolex watches since. The 1950s saw the introduction of the Oyster Perpetual Date line. For some context, in 1945 Rolex had released the Datejust as the first ever self-winding wristwatch with a date indication in a 36mm waterproof case. The Oyster Perpetual Date, on the other hand, came in a slightly smaller 34 mm case and has been in continuous production until this very day.
