The 1970s marked a turning point in watch design, ushering in funkier aesthetics and far more adventurous choices. Even the typically conservative Rolex began to experiment; most notably with bolder colors and unconventional materials. This era gave birth not only to the vibrant Stella dials, but also to the rare and more enigmatic natural stone dials.

Among them, Red Jasper stands out as one of the most captivating. With its deep, organic tones and unmistakable character, it remains a true outlier within the Rolex universe. For reasons still unclear, this dial was produced exclusively for 1970s Rolex Datejust references and was never offered in a Day-Date configuration, nor carried into the later five-digit era. As a result, Red Jasper is exceptionally scarce, even by stone-dial standards.

This particular example is very compelling. The stone itself is free of cracks, a rarity in its own right. While the printed text is not entirely perfect (small portions of the gold printing are missing) it presents no visual distraction and does nothing to diminish the dial’s striking presence.

The dial is housed in a 1972 Rolex Datejust and first surfaced publicly in 2023, when it crossed the block at Christie’s. Despite being offered without a bracelet and fitted with luminous hands, it achieved a very respectable result. Following its acquisition, the next caretaker completed the watch properly: sourcing a period, well-preserved President bracelet and fitting the correct non-luminous hands.

The result is a beautifully realized example of one of Rolex’s most elusive and evocative creations: a spectacular slab of stone that perfectly captures the experimental spirit of the 1970s.
