Until some years ago, Rolex allowed sovereign and corporate clients to commission special order watches. Some of the most collectible among these are the ones bearing crest dials from the various Arab monarchies in the Persian Gulf. This ref. 16030 Datejust from 1986 features Saudi Arabia’s national emblem together with the name of then-king Fahd in Arabic script (فهد) on the dial. The dial is executed in Rolex’ classic sunburst silver color together with 18k yellow-gold applied hour markers with matching gold hands. This dial configuration is unusual on regular production Datejusts  as yellow-gold markers and hands are usually reserved for full-gold and two-tone Datejusts, but are characteristic of Arabic crest dials. The 36 mm stainless steel case features a steel engine-turned bezel and comes on a matching steel Jubilee bracelet. The case is in great condition with some minor marks and scratches, while the bracelet has a small amount of stretch. The watch sports a vintage plexi crystal and runs on the workhorse caliber 3035 automatic movement with handy quickset date function.

Introduction

Rolex DatejustIn 1945 Rolex created the flagship Datejust to mark the company’s 40th anniversary. This model was the world’s first self-winding wristwatch with a date indication. With the Datejust, Rolex also introduced the iconic 5-piece jubilee bracelet, first in solid gold and later in bicolor and stainless steel. On the tenth anniversary of the Datejust in 1955, the magnifying ‘cyclops lens’ was introduced on the Datejust.Ref. 16xxxThe Datejust 16xxx (5 digits) references were introduced in the late 1970s and are easily recognizable by their flat dials (as opposed to the pie-pan dials of the 16xx series). This ‘newer’ Datejust came with the updated calibre 3035 that introduced the quick set date function.
