Daytona prices have gone stratospheric over the past decade. Fittingly, the only thing to come down to earth is the meteorite used to create this extraordinary dial.
Jokes aside, the ref. 116509 is perhaps the ultimate stealth-wealth Daytona. To the untrained eye, it could pass for stainless steel, but the moment it hits the wrist, the weight tells a different story. Both the case and bracelet are crafted from solid 18k white gold, giving the watch a sense of luxury that reveals itself through feel rather than flash.
As impressive as the precious metal construction is, the real centerpiece is undoubtedly the dial. Cut from genuine meteorite, no two examples are ever identical. Its mesmerizing texture comes alive in changing light, revealing the famous Widmanstätten pattern; a natural crystalline structure formed over millions of years as nickel-iron meteorites cooled in space. The result is a dial that feels almost alive, constantly shifting and revealing new details from every angle.
Rolex paired this cosmic canvas with applied 18k white gold Roman numerals and sharply recessed subdials, creating depth and contrast without disturbing the monochromatic aesthetic. The otherwise understated palette is tastefully punctuated by vivid red accents on the chronograph hand and subdial hands, adding just the right amount of sportiness to the elegant design.
It dates back to 2008, which is the first year of production for this dial. Remaining in excellent condition. The case retains thick lugs and crisp edges, the bezel still great and the Oyster bracelet remains tight.
Inside beats Rolex’s legendary Caliber 4130; the brand’s first fully in-house automatic chronograph movement, introduced in 2000 and celebrated for its robustness, efficiency, and reliability. Combined with the Daytona’s iconic racing pedigree and the rarity of the meteorite dial, the 116509 stands as one of the most compelling modern Daytonas ever produced: discreet, luxurious, and undeniably special.
Introduction
Rolex Cosmograph DaytonaRolex started making chronographs in the 1930s, but it was only in 1963 that a named product line was introduced: the Cosmograph. In some early advertisements, Rolex referred to the watch as the ‘Le Mans’ after the famous race track in France, although the name never appeared on the dial. After a few years, the line was officially renamed Cosmograph Daytona, after the racetrack in Florida. The most noticeable difference between these Cosmograph (Daytona) models and earlier Rolex chronographs was the tachymeter scale (used for measuring distance and speed) that was moved from its traditional placement on the dial to the bezel. Furthermore, the dial was updated with the introduction of contrasting sub-dials.It's hard to imagine now, but Daytonas received little love after their release. Most Daytonas languished in dealer displays for years and only started to get noticed by Italian collectors and dealers in the late 1980s. Nowadays, Daytonas are among the most sought after Rolex models, fetching prices from $20,000 for modern ones to many millions for rare vintage references. A big contrast with the $210 list price when it was first released!
