Among Rolex’s many exotic stone dials, few strike the balance between boldness and elegance quite like sodalite. Deep blue, richly textured, and filled with natural character, it gives the Daytona an entirely different personality; one that feels both refined and unmistakably expressive.

The ref. 116509 has long been considered the connoisseur’s Daytona. While its 40mm Oyster case and bracelet appear understated at first glance, they are crafted entirely from solid 18k white gold. The weight on the wrist immediately reveals that this is no ordinary Daytona. Offering its luxury through substance and detail instead of overt flash.

The true focal point, however, is the sodalite dial. Formed from a richly mineralized blue stone streaked with white veining, every dial is completely unique. The natural patterns resemble clouds drifting through a midnight sky, giving the watch an almost celestial appearance. Depending on the light, the dial shifts between vibrant royal blue and darker navy tones, constantly changing character throughout the day.

Rolex paired the stone dial with applied 18k white gold arabic quarters and diamond hour markers. The white graphics and recessed subdials create depth and contrast without overpowering the natural beauty of the sodalite itself. The red chronograph accents add a subtle sporty touch, breaking up the cooler tones just enough to preserve the Daytona’s racing spirit beneath the luxurious exterior.

This example dates back to 2008 and remains in excellent condition overall. The case retains strong proportions with thick lugs and crisp factory lines, while the Oyster bracelet remains tight with only minor signs of wear and light surface marks consistent with careful ownership.

Inside beats the Rolex Caliber 4130, the brand’s first fully in-house automatic chronograph movement. Introduced in 2000, it quickly became celebrated for its reliability, efficiency, and technical simplicity, helping establish the modern Daytona as one of the most respected chronographs ever produced.

Rarely encountered and instantly recognizable, the sodalite dial Daytona is one of the most distinctive executions of the 116509. It combines the discreet luxury of white gold with the unpredictable beauty of natural stone, resulting in a watch that feels both deeply personal and undeniably collectible.
