Damn, this 16753 is a seriously sweet and sexy watch. Quite literally, it’s a root beer GMT with Nipple dial!Rootbeer is a sweet carbonated North-American soda that is traditionally made from the root bark of the sassafras tree. Among watch aficionados it also refers to the soda-inspired colour scheme due to the watch’s sunburst brown dial and two-tone bezel. The watch is also the most pornographic one. Just look at those small nipple-shaped hour markers! The 16753 is Rolex’ first ever two-tone sports reference. This particular execution dates back to 1984. The stainless steel case measures 40 mm in diameter and is thinner than its cousin the Submariner, giving it a slim profile on the wrist. The 18k yellow-gold and stainless steel Jubilee bracelet is the perfect accompaniment for Rolex’ traveller/pilot watch. The watch houses the upgraded caliber 3075, which for the first time introduced a quickset date function in the GMT.The brown dial is in impeccable condition, with beautiful small applied yellow-gold markers, also known as ‘Nipple indices’, and yellow-gold hands. The tritium lume in the markers and hands has aged to a creamy colour. These details, combined with the gold printing, give the watch a sumptuous and warm look.

Introduction

Rolex GMT-MasterFasten your seatbelts for the story of the inimitable Rolex GMT-Master! As civil aviation took off after World War II, airlines began to fly over longer distances. As a result, pilots required accurate watches that could display multiple time zones simultaneously. In the early 1950s, Pan American Airways (Pan-Am) requested Rolex to develop a watch for this very purpose. The GMT-Master (‘GMT’ standing for ‘Greenwich Mean Time’) was introduced in 1954. It featured a 24-hour hand alongside the regular 12-hour hand. In combination with a bidirectional 24-hour bezel, this GMT hand could be used to read the home time zone while the 12-hour hand displayed the ‘local’ time.Despite its close links to aviation and its professional purpose, the Rolex GMT enjoys a fanbase far beyond the pilots it was originally intended for. Over the years Rolex has introduced many wonderful variations of the GMT: take your pick!
