Any self-respecting watch manufacture needs a sporty chronograph in its line up. Audemars Piguet thought just that when it introduced the impressive Royal Oak Chronograph in 1997.
To celebrate the Royal Oak’s 25th anniversary in 1997, Audemars Piguet announced the release of the first-ever Royal Oak with a chronograph functionality. The use of the classic ‘Jumbo’ case, similar in size and style to the original Royal Oak from 1972, together with an ultra-thin automatic chronograph movement gives the watch a sleek and refined profile, while retaining its luxury sporty looks.
This ref. 25860 dates back to 2003 and features the iconic Geralda Genta-designed 39 mm stainless steel case together with the matching stainless steel integrated bracelet. The mesmerizing electric blue dial sports Audemars Piguet’s classic ‘Grande Tappisserie’ together with three recessed Art Deco sector-style sub-registers. Meanwhile, a discreet aperture between the 4 and 5 o’clock position provides a useful date function.
This 25860ST is in excellent condition with sharp beveled edges and a tight bracelet. The watch is accompanied by an extract from the Audemars Piguet archives.
Introduction
Audemars Piguet Royal OakIn 1970, Audemars Piguet instructed Genta to come up with an unprecedented steel watch. As the story goes, he found inspiration whilst seeing a diver at work with an old-fashioned diver’s helmet near Lake Geneva. Staying up all night, Genta drew the design for a circular case with an angular, octagonal bezel, eight visible screws, and an integrated bracelet. The Royal Oak was presented in 1972 as the most expensive steel watch available and it caused an uproar: why was a distinguished maison d’horlogerie putting out a sports watch, let alone in such a pedestrian material? Some experts even predicted that the Royal Oak would put Audemars Piguet out of business. Though it took a while to catch on, the Royal Oak is now one of the most iconic and long-lasting watch designs, and has spawned an entire product line. It wouldn’t be the first time that Genta would prove a brand’s owners, customers, and industry experts wrong.
