The watch was back then, in ’72, considered as too big (39 mm) and too expensive (3,300 Swiss francs). It received fierce criticism and the watch was considered out of place. Nevertheless, the quality and charm could not be denied by collectors and trendsetters. One year later, after AP had sold 1000 pieces, sales truly took off and the AP Royal Oak became – as Genta himself said – a masterpiece. The 15300 has the initial 'Jumbo' case size of 39 mm but then, with a slightly thicker case (9.4 mm) and bracelet. This provides the watch with an entirely different look and feel. It's quite heavy on the wrist but very comfortable and it surely maintains great wrist presence thanks to its solid design. Some people might argue that the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak reference 15300 is the more masculine version of the reference 15202. It has the iconic Gerald Genta design that was inspired by an old-fashioned divers helmet, which can clearly be seen when one takes a look at the bezel. The watch has a 'Grande Tapisserie' dial with the applied 'AP' logo on the 12-hour position, below 'Audemars Piguet' written in full and 'Automatic' written in full above the 6-hour position. The example we have on offer is in great condition and still in the stickers from its last service. It dates back to 2009 and comes as a full set including the Extract from the Archive.
Audemars Piguet Royal OakIn 1970, Audemars Piguet instructed Genta to come up with an unprecedented steel watch. As the story goes, he found inspiration whilst seeing a diver at work with an old-fashioned diver’s helmet near Lake Geneva. Staying up all night, Genta drew the design for a circular case with an angular, octagonal bezel, eight visible screws, and an integrated bracelet. The Royal Oak was presented in 1972 as the most expensive steel watch available and it caused an uproar: why was a distinguished maison d’horlogerie putting out a sports watch, let alone in such a pedestrian material? Some experts even predicted that the Royal Oak would put Audemars Piguet out of business. Though it took a while to catch on, the Royal Oak is now one of the most iconic and long-lasting watch designs and has spawned an entire product line. It wouldn’t be the first time that Genta would prove a brand’s owners, customers, and industry experts wrong.
