It’s absolutely ridiculous that stainless steel Rolex sports models that are still in production are fetching crazy prices on the second-hand market. There’s only one modern Sub that you should be paying that much for and it’s not in production anymore: the 16610LV, better known as the ‘Kermit’.

Rolex doesn’t do tributes or limited editions. But there’s an exception to every rule. At Baselworld 2003, Rolex unveiled a special Submariner to mark the Sub’s 50th anniversary. This special release infused the traditionally sober stainless steel sub with a pop of color. The watch sported a green bezel, mirroring the Rolex corporate color. The 16610LV was also the first iteration of the Submariner to sport a Maxi dial, with the larger indexes.

This model was only produced for a short 7 years, making it the most collectible modern Rolex watch. In typical Rolex fashion, the model underwent several incremental changes over the years. The very first executions of the LV, dating back to 2003/2004 (with Y or F serials) are the most collectible. The piece we’re offering is an F-serial dating back to early 2004, also known as the ‘Mark 1’ variation.

The watch comes with a dark-green ‘flat four’ bezel, indicating that the number '4' on the bezel has a flat top. The watch is available as a full set, with the original box and papers, booklets, tags, bezel protector and even the sought-after Rolex anchor. But more importantly the 40 mm watch case is razor-sharp and comes on its original and virtually unworn, steel Oyster bracelet.

Rolex SubmarinerIn 1953, Rolex introduced one of the world’s first wrist watches geared specifically towards divers: the Submariner. Rolex had to confront a number of challenges when designing its first dive watch. The watch obviously had to withstand significant amounts of pressure and had to accurately measure time spent underwater, which the first Submariner achieved by featuring a 330ft/100m depth rating and a rotating diving bezel. It also had to be easily legible in conditions of reduced visibility yet aesthetically pleasing. Hence, the Sub’s iconic large white tritium hour markers and Mercedes hands set against a contrasting black dial.The Submariner is the most iconic and desirable luxury watch of all time and has been adopted by luminaries such as Jacques Cousteau, Che Guevara, and none other than James Bond. Our favorite Bond, Sean Connery, wore a big crown Sub in the 1962 classic ‘Dr. No’. The watch was also featured in ‘Goldfinger’ and ‘Thunderball’.
