The epitome of a vintage Rolex, often dubbed as 'King Sub'.

Rolex launched, arguably the most iconic, wristwatch ever in 1953. The first 3 diving timepiece were the ref. 6200, 6204 and 6205. The first mentioned is in todays spotlight and for many it is the most beloved and important toolwatch ever created. Besides the previously mentioned nickname, this -among other references- is also referred to as "Big crown".

This distinguishable feature measures 8mm and reads "BREVET", which is French for patent. Rolex and waterproofness go way back to the 20's and besides the Oyster case, their crown-mechanism plays a significant role to ensure no dust or moist will seep in. In fact, the depth rating was up to 200m, double that of its "small-crown siblings" 6204 & 6205. However, this is not displayed on this dial.

Numerous dial designs are known for the 6200, with as common denominator the Explorer style dial; meaning: the 3, 6 and 9 are in Arabic numerals. The luminous compound of the index is quite radioactive as Radium was applied on the galvanised surface. This also plays a factor for the preservation of the dial. Most examples out there have sever "radium burn" and have lost most lustre and beauty. This one, however, still very strongly shows the contrast between the dial and the printing and developed a charming patina. "Less is more" on this clean example with sober lay-out as only the big logo is shown above the "Oyster Perpetual" wording.

Besides a variety in dials, and bezel-inlays, different handsets have been used. Our specimen sports the ubiquitous Mercedes-style hands, which are longer for this reference compared to its successors; resulting in a more elegant look. These hands are set in motion by cal. A296: the beating heart of this beast.

It is estimated a few hundred have been produced with serial ranging between 319xx and 32xxx. Only very few ever surfaced for sale and even less are still looking attractive after 7 decades of live. The complete overhaul has been documented by Fratello Watches in an elaborate article.
